Pratt Fine Arts Center Announces the Launch of the Professional Artist-in-Residence Program

 (Printmaking/Painting/Drawing Focus)

Pratt provides professional artists with the opportunity to take advantage of our specialized studios, along with access to experienced assistants to help them explore the potential of new materials and processes, through a month-long residency.

We seek applications from established local, national and/or international artists for whom a change of environment may offer inspiration and time for experimentation.

The residency is available between May 15th and July 31st, 2013 and supports artists working primarily in printmaking, painting and drawing.

Artists may also choose to take advantage of our other studios and work in areas in which they have little experience (blacksmithing, metal fabrication, mold making, bronze and aluminum casting, stone carving, jewelry and metalsmithing, wood-working, glassblowing, flame-worked glass, kiln forming and hot cast glass) with the support of skilled artist assistants. Access to some studios is contingent on availability; all efforts will be made to accommodate the artist’s proposal. The residency requires instruction of a 3-4 day workshop in the artist’s area of specialization (specifics to be arranged in April). A class description and image must be provided for promotional use.

Award details included in the residency are a stipend of US $1,500, travel costs (with approval), a $500 materials stipend and a $500 credit toward private instruction, assistance and/or studio rental (there is no studio rental fee for the use of the printmaking, painting or drawing studios). Access to formal classes is available with prearrangement. In addition, Pratt will provide a venue, reception and publicity for a public lecture. Pratt will make every effort to provide housing for out-of-town recipients. Travel while in Seattle, food and any additional needs outside those specifically outlined are not provided.

Processing Fee:

A nonrefundable processing fee of US $30 is required with each application.

Application Postmark Deadline: Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2013

Applicants will be notified before April.  All applicants must include a self-addressed stamped envelope for any application materials you would like returned.

HOW TO APPLY

Required Materials:

Project Proposal that addressed the following questions.  (Please send as either a pdf or word file, limit to one page)
What are the specifics of your proposed project?
Are you applying to use any studios other than printmaking, painting and drawing during the residency? If so, which studios? Please describe how you would use each requested studio to enhance your project.
What kind of resources do you need to complete your project?
What type of workshop do you envision presenting with your residency?
How would working at Pratt further your artistic goals or inspire your practice?

Artist Resume no more than 2 pages
10 images on a cd or dvd
1920 pixels x 1920 pixels in jpeg format with a resolution of 300 pixels per inch
image details for each image (title of work, date executed, media and dimensions.)
video and sound
clips no more than 1 minute 30 seconds
A brief narrative (50 words) may accompany the clip.

Juror /Application panel: 

Invitations for residencies are extended based on evaluations made by a panel consisting of 5 jurors; a combination of Pratt Staff and rotation of local artists in a variety of disciplines.
